Eat Like Our Ancestors

The meat-intensive Paleo Diet has inspired people today to focus on a high-protein, low-carb diet, driven by the claim that this is how our ancestors ate. A lot of low-carb diets touch on this theme of “ancestral” living.

Thousands of years ago, our ancestors didn’t have the industrial farming techniques required to sustain life off of vegetables, potatoes, or rice, but they also didn’t have access to a deli counter of meat options – hunting was difficult, and inconsistent, and the diets of our early ancestors were actually much more variable than some today would have you believe.

In a lot of ways, meat-heavy, ancestral diets might be “romanticizing…what hunting and gathering was [actually] like.” Even early humans understood the need for carbohydrate sources like honey, root vegetables, and native/seasonal fruits, and focusing a diet entirely on protein sources because that’s how our early ancestors used to eat is a bit misplaced.
